Athelstan Spilhaus

Athelstan Frederick Spilhaus (1911-1998), geophysicist and inventor of the bathythermograph. As NYU's Director of Research he oversaw the balloon project - but per the USAF report was never told the classified MOGUL name or purpose, illustrating the program's compartmentalization.
