NURO (Natl. Underwater Reconnaissance Office)

1969

A joint US Navy/CIA office created in 1969 to run undersea intelligence collection from specially-equipped nuclear submarines (cable-tapping, Soviet-sub monitoring); its existence stayed classified until 1998, and its named director was the Secretary of the Navy. Included as the institutional anchor for the undersea/USO-retrieval angle raised in UAP discussion - not itself a UAP claim.
