Physicist and second director of Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (1945-1970), succeeding Robert Oppenheimer. Participated in the classified February 1949 conference on the green fireball phenomenon, pushing back on Teller's analysis by noting light could come from chemical sources rather than kinetic energy alone.
