Louis Witten

1957

Theoretical physicist specializing in gravitation and general relativity who worked at RIAS - the Research Institute for Advanced Studies, the Martin Company's research arm - during the late-1950s Cold War push to understand (and possibly engineer) gravity. He has said Wright Field commissioned gravity research at the time. Father of Edward Witten, the pre-eminent string theorist. A concrete link between mainstream physics and the mid-century military "anti-gravity" research milieu.
