Gerald Ford

1966-03-25what this date marks is not recorded

38th U.S. President; as House Minority Leader he wrote to the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee on 28 March 1966 about the Michigan sightings, naming the Air Force consultant J. Allen Hynek as the man who dismissed them as "college student pranks or swamp gas or an impression created by the rising crescent moon and the planet Venus", and saying "I do not agree that all of these reports can be or should be so easily explained away." In the same letter he proposed that either the Science and Astronautics Committee or the Armed Services Committee schedule hearings on UFOs. His letter is printed in the House Armed Services Committee's UFO hearing of 5 April 1966, at folio 6046 - eight days after he wrote it. Whether it caused that hearing is not established here.

This entity's name appears in the 1 document below. That is the entire claim. Nothing here is evidence for anything on this map, no connection rests on it, and it says nothing about what the document is about. It is a place to look next.

The release calls it “65_HS1-834228961_62-HQ-83894_Section_10”. Release filename only. The file is an FBI case-file section; no title page states a title. It is not adopted as a title here.

3 corrections to this record

Generated from the record, not written by hand. Every change keeps what the map used to say, because a correction nobody can see is indistinguishable from never having been wrong.

Gerald Ford → J. Allen Hynek
publicly called his "swamp gas" explanation flippant
named him in a letter to the Armed Services Committee as the consultant who dismissed the Michigan sightings as swamp gas, and said he did not agree they could be so easily explained away
THE WORD "FLIPPANT" IS NOT ON THE PAGE, and "swamp gas" occurs exactly once in parts 2 to 6, on this sheet. Folio 6046 prints Ford's letter of 28 March 1966: the Air Force "sent a consultant, Astrophysicist Dr. J. Allen Hynek of Northwestern University, to Michigan to investigate the various reports; and he dismissed all of them as the product of college student pranks or swamp gas or an impression created by the rising crescent moon and the planet Venus. I do not agree that all of these reports can be or should be so easily explained away." That is disagreement, not the characterisation the claim asserted. Read as an image 2026-08-25.
Gerald Ford → Edward Condon
his 1966 push led the Air Force to fund Condon's study
publicly pressed for a congressional inquiry into UFOs in 1966, the same week the Air Force commissioned Condon's University of Colorado study
The cited page carries both facts and explicitly declines to join them: "Whether or not that was so, the Air Force last week took definite steps to make itself feel better." The causation was ours. The passage on that page has recorded this in its does_not_support field since 19 August and the connection went on asserting it.
Gerald Ford → SAB Ad Hoc Committee to Review Project Blue Book
his 1966 pressure campaign led to it being formed
pressed the Air Force on UFOs in March 1966, five months after the memorandum that requested this committee
The claim asserted a causation the dates rule out. The committee was requested in a memorandum of 28 September 1965 and met on 3 February 1966; the Ford letter printed in the same hearing is dated 28 March 1966. Both hearing pages were read as an image here. The relationship between Ford and the committee is real and stays on the map; the direction of cause is what has been removed. Operator decision, 24 August 2026.

Notes on this record

This description, checked against the record

Checked against Unidentified Flying Objects on 2026-08-25.

The document carries these 5

  • the letter is dated 28 March 1966 and is addressed to Representative L. Mendel Rivers, Chairman, Armed Services Committee
  • it names "Astrophysicist Dr. J. Allen Hynek of Northwestern University" as the consultant the Air Force sent to Michigan
  • it says he "dismissed all of them as the product of college student pranks or swamp gas or an impression created by the rising crescent moon and the planet Venus"
  • it says "I do not agree that all of these reports can be or should be so easily explained away"
  • it says "I am proposing that either the Science and Astronautics Committee or the Armed Services Committee of the House schedule hearings on the subject of UFO's"

It does not support this

that Ford called the swamp gas explanation "flippant"

The word appears in NO document this project holds. It was quoted in this role as if it were his, which reads as better sourced than a paraphrase, not worse. What would settle it is fordlibrarymuseum-gov-4525586-pdf, the Ford Library press releases, which this project holds as a catalogue entry with ZERO pages read.

It does not support this

that he was "demanding" hearings

The letter says "I am proposing". Read as an image at folio 6046, 165 dpi, 2026-08-25.

It does not support this

that his pressure campaign led directly to the Condon Committee

Condon is named nowhere on the sheets read. At folio 6044 Secretary Brown says he holds a recommendation from the Scientific Advisory Board to establish a civilian panel and "I believe I may act favorably on it, but I want to explore further the nature of such a panel, and the ground rules, before I go ahead with it" - a hedge about a future decision, on a recommendation that came from the SAB rather than from Ford. The same causal overreach was struck from link 1020 on 2026-08-24.
